Food That Will Improve the Overall Health of the Elderly

As we get older, our diet becomes more restricted and there are more kinds of food that should be avoided. This is because as we age, we become more prone to weight gain because we are less active, we have less muscle, and our metabolism slows down. Senior citizens have to eat fewer calories while at the same time making sure that they have all the nutrients to keep them healthy. This can be done by eating the right foods that have a very high nutritional value. Some examples of high nutrition food that will help the elderly maintain weight and good health include:

  • Lean Proteins. Lean proteins such as lean beef and chicken, fish, eggs, and beans are a good source of zinc, iron, and vitamin b12. These minerals and vitamins help promote healthy blood in the body and maintain muscle density. One thing to consider, however, is to choose the lean proteins that are low in sodium content because excess sodium can lead to high blood pressure.
  • Fiber-Rich Food. A high-fiber diet will help prevent constipation and improve the intestinal health of the elderly. A few examples of food that are rich in fiber are fruits such as apples and bananas, vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower, and grains such as brown rice and lentils.
